“…Merckx basically just showed up and mounted his bike and took off. Also his coach told him to slowdown after 5 kilometers as he was on a pace to set new world records in all the 5 km increments. Merckx later said he felt he could have gone further otherwise and it was the hardest he had ever ridden and would not do it again.”
